Kratom in science and medicine

In the US scientists have found a new drug to combat addiction to painkillers – “Kratom”, which should replace heroin and other opioids. However, it may soon be declared prohibited.

One nail drives out another

The US authorities are seriously concerned: according to The New York Times, over the past year, the number of deaths from a drug overdose almost doubled, America’s new anti-record — about 64,000 people. Oddly enough, the culprits of drug epidemics are doctors: they prescribe strong painkillers even in cases where you can do without opioids that cause addiction. It is these drugs becomes the first step towards addiction. “Prescription drug addicts” are becoming more and more, while the number of newborns with opium withdrawal syndrome is also increasing.

Kratom is freely available: it is sold in the form of powder or capsules.

While America is looking for a solution, Indonesia supplies Kratom to the United States — an herbal supplement that helps to cope with severe chronic pain and even give up powerful opioids such as heroin.

Is it miracle?

Kratom is a plant from Southeast Asia, belongs to the family marenovyh (relative of the coffee tree). Mistrust of the Kratom is primarily because the authorities fear abuse of it, which will lead to an increase in the number of drug addicts. However, researchers of this drug claim that getting used to Kratom is the same as getting used to coffee, and rejecting it does not cause any particular difficulties. Scott Hembi, a professor of pharmacy at High Point University who studies Kratom, concluded that the plant has therapeutic properties: it helps with depression, anxiety disorder, and alleviates the symptoms of dependence on painkillers, which will eventually help to finally get rid of opioid drugs. This is what the main argument “behind” Kratom becomes.

The slogan of the Kratom support movement

Suspiciously good

The FDA is concerned that at the present time, Kratom is attributed more and more useful properties, making it almost a panacea. However, Scott Hembi stated that when using Kratom, safe 7-hydroxy-nitraginine plays a major role, and after a little processing, its content can be increased. This should enhance the effect of the drug and open up new methods to combat the drug crisis.

So far all this is only hypotheses and assumptions. The lack of official studies of the effectiveness of Kratom does not allow drawing final conclusions about natural analgesics. The sphere of distribution of the Kratom is now in the shadow, but the discussion of legalization (or vice versa – of the ban) of the Kratom has risen to a new level and reached the Congress, which means that the society is already serious about this question.
